Recipients honored at second annual César E. Chavez Community Recognition Awards

FLAGSTAFF — With a guest speaker and attendees remembering their personal connection to César E. Chávez, guests applauding the sacrifices of local World War II-era Latino veterans, the accomplishments of a local educational leader and the promising start of tomorrow’s leaders — the second annual “César E. Chávez Community Recognition Awards” provided a fitting tribute to community members past, present and future.

The celebration was presented by the Coconino Hispanic Advisory Council (CHAC).

Nearly 50 area residents, dignitaries and elected officials took part in the early morning celebration held Friday, April 1 at Tacos Los Altos Westside in the Woodlands Village Shopping Center, Flagstaff.

The event honored Flagstaff residents in several categories. For the Hispanic Pioneers and World War II Veterans Award, Benjamin Aginiga, Tomas Vega and Tom Urias were honored. Flagstaff educator Frank Garcia, principal at Thomas Elementary School, received the Community Leadership Award. Finally, Michael Adame, a junior at Northern Arizona University majoring in communications, received the Future Leader Award.

CHAC serves as an official liaison and communications link between the Hispanic community and the Coconino County Board of Supervisors, so please bring any concerns you may have about equal education opportunities, fair employment, juvenile justice, political representation and other issues.

CHAC is a supporter of the Ballet Folklórico de Colores — Flagstaff, Flagstaff Nuestras Raíces, the Hispanic Convocation at Northern Arizona University, the Sunnyside Neighborhood Association of Flagstaff and other organizations.

CHAC to present second annual César E. Chávez Community Recognition Breakfast on April 1

04-01-16 Cesar E. Chavez Community Recognition BreakfastFLAGSTAFF — The Coconino Hispanic Advisory Council will present the second annual César E. Chávez Community Recognition Breakfast from 7:30 to 9 a.m. Friday, April 1 at Tacos Los Altos Westside, 2500 S. Woodlands Village, Flagstaff.

The event will honor Hispanic veterans, community and student leaders.

The guest speaker is Jose J. Cortez, who will share his story of working with the United Farm Workers Union and also on the KJZZ program “Making of the ‘Chavistas.’ ” Click here to listen to the program.

Flagstaff Police Department Citizens Liaison Committee to hold next quarterly meeting at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church Cultural Center on March 10

03-10-16 Community MeetingFLAGSTAFF — The Flagstaff Police Department Citizens Liaison Committee will hold its next quarterly meeting at 6 p.m. Thursday, March 10 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church Cultural Center (The Basement), 224 S. Kendrick St., Flagstaff.

Participants will:

  • Receive feedback from the Flagstaff Police Department on citizen input from the committee’s first open house meeting of Dec. 10, 2015
  • Hear a brief presentation by community members of the committee on the progress to develop a strategic plan for the new organization
  • Have an opportunity to ask or submit questions to the committee on public safety, community relations and other issues affecting the community

About the committee: The group was formed following discussions with the community in early 2014 and is supported by a grant from the Arizona Community Foundation, the Flagstaff Community Foundation and the Forest Highlands Foundation. Members will work to improve the communications process between the department and the community, encourage community members to submit complaints without fear of retribution and provide a proactive informational forum to address community concerns when incidents and issues arise. Members represent a cross-section of the community and include  Roxana Cardiel De Niz, Scott Deasy, Jessie Dominguez, Deborah Harris, Kathryn Jim, Pit Kolodinsky, Laura Longoria, Frank X. Moraga, Marianne Sullivan, Rose Toehe, Kevin Treadway, Walt Miller and Lina H. Wallen.
