CHAC to present 5th annual César E. Chávez Community Recognition Breakfast on March 29, 2019

FLAGSTAFF— The Coconino County Hispanic Advisory Council (CHAC) will present its fifth annual César E. Chávez Community Recognition Breakfast from 7:30 to 9 a.m. Friday, March 29, 2019 at American Legion Post 3, 204 W. Birch Ave., Flagstaff. Doors open at 6:45 a.m.

The event honors Coconino County Purple Heart veterans, community, and student leaders.

Bill Barquin, chair of the Arizona Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and chief operating officer for the Cesar Chavez Foundation’s Communications Fund and its flagship program — Radio Compesina, will be the keynote speaker. Barquin has been recognized by the Phoenix Business Journal as a 40 under 40 Leader in Arizona, as well as a recipient of the Univision Communications “40 Under 40 Hispanic Leaders in Arizona” and Cox Communication’s Hispanic Leader of Arizona.

About CHAC: The Coconino County Hispanic Advisory Council was established in 2001 with the purpose of advising the County Board f Supervisors on issues and concerns that affect the Hispanic community in Coconino County. In addition to serving as an advisory group to the county supervisors, the council has identified the following five major areas of focus:

  • To review and make recommendations on proposed local, state and federal legislation affecting the Hispanic community.
  • To examine and assist in planning policies in the areas of employment, education, housing, land use, social services, health, mental health, criminal justice and recreation.
  • To assist Coconino County in recruiting and retaining Hispanic employees.
  • To promote Hispanic cultural arts, historic activities and events.
  • To conduct forums on issues and concerns of the Hispanic community in Coconino County.

CHAC serves as an official liaison and communications link between the Hispanic community and the Coconino County Board of Supervisors, so please bring any concerns you may have about equal education opportunities, fair employment, juvenile justice, political representation and other issues.

CHAC is a supporter of the Ballet Folklórico de Colores — Flagstaff, Flagstaff Nuestras Raíces, the Hispanic Convocation at Northern Arizona University, the Sunnyside Neighborhood Association of Flagstaff and other organizations.

CHAC celebrates variety of events in December

FLAGSTAFF — Members of the Coconino Hispanic Advisory Council (CHAC) participated in a number of events in December as 2018 came to a close.

CHAC members participated, above and below, at the Northern Arizona University “Lumberjacks of Inclusion” ceremony held Dec. 13 at the High Country Conference Center.

“Similar to a convocation ceremony, Lumberjacks of Inclusion brings together and honors graduating students from all ethnic, cultural, identity, service and experiential backgrounds,” the university reported in a media release. “In this unique event, all students will celebrate together with shared performances, convocation ceremonies and special refreshments.” Photos above and below by Ruth Eaton.

CHAC joins other Diversity Councils during the 2018 Holiday Parade of Lights

FLAGSTAFF — The Coconino Hispanic Advisory Council joined with the African American Advisory and the Intertribal Advisory councils for the 2018 Vora Financial Holiday Parade of Lights, held Dec. 8 in downtown Flagstaff.

A variety of local businesses, non profit organizations, public safety and other agencies took part in the event.
