Winners and participants of CHAC’s annual Hispanic Heritage Month Essay Contest were honored by the Coconino County Board of Supervisors during a ceremony held on Nov. 15, 2011 at the Coconino County Administration building in Flagstaff.
Students and their parents had the opportunity to meet with board members and the public at a reception hosted by CHAC in the lobby of the board’s chamber prior to the award ceremony. Among those attending the reception were Larry Dannenfeldt, deputy county manager, who spoke with essay contest award winner Konner Brackin.
Those receiving awards were Angelica Garcia of San Francisco de Asis Catholic School, who took first place; Konner Brackin of San Francisco de Asis Catholic School, who received second place; and Deebora Deebom of San Francisco de Asis Catholic School, who received third place. Nezbahe Williams of The Peaks School received a certificate of participation.
The topic of this year’s essay contest was “The Immigration Experience,” a story or interview of a personal account of a family experience about immigration to the United States.
Following the ceremony, the award winners gathered outside the board room for a photo taking session, which included their parents and their teacher, Ms. Amy Faull.

Nuestras Raíces new photo/video blog features slideshows from recent Celebraciones de la Gente held Oct. 29 and 30 at the Museum of Northern Arizona in Flagstaff. The event was presented by the museum and Flagstaff Nuestras Raíces.
FLAGSTAFF — The Sunnyside Neighborhood Association’s I.A.M. Youth group will host the annual Hip Hop 4 Hunger Can Food Drive from 7:30 to 10 p.m. Friday, Nov. 18 at Killip Elementary School, 2600 E. Sixth Ave., Flagstaff.
This is an all age’s event that will include music, dancing and fun for everyone. Please join us, the group reported in a media release. This event is intended to help feed families in a time of need. The importance here is food so the event will double as a drop off location for people to donate canned goods. All of the food collected will be donated to the Northern Arizona Food Bank. The event is sponsored in part by the “A Beautiful Life – Hermosa Vida – Nizhóní Iiná” initiative that promotes healthy lifestyles in recognition that a healthy life is a beautiful life.
The event consists of local musicians donating their time to perform for the cause. Hip Hop Artists performing at the event include Classik, Carrillo, Raw Sewage Records, L.A.Y.N.M (Christian rap group), and Southwest Mafia. The event will also include Alena Chavez and Monico Nunez, who will be performing traditional Mexican music. The event will also be showcasing the super talented dancer Steven Herrera who will be “pop-locking” which is a form of Break dancing.
Claudio Sanchez, education correspondent for National Public Radio, will be the guest speaker during the free presentation: “The Rights of Immigrant Children: A Reporter’s Notebook” at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 8 at the High Country Conference Center, 20 E. Butler Ave., Flagstaff.
Sanchez, a former elementary and middle school teacher, joined NPR in 1989, after serving for a year as executive producer for the El Paso, Texas, based Latin American News Service, a daily national radio news service covering Latin America and the U.S.- Mexico border, according to a media release. Sanchez is a native of Nogales, Mexico, and a graduate of Northern Arizona University.
Members the Art History Society for Northern Arizona University celebrated the annual Día de los Muertos on Nov.2 at the amphitheater outside of the University Union. Members presented an ofrenda (altar) honoring Mexican artist Guadalupe Posada, along with facepainting and other activities. For more information on the event, send an email to tad76@nau.edu
