Celebraciones de la Gente concluded on Sunday, Oct. 30 with the blessing of the altars, complete with music by Mariachi Sol Azteca from Tuscon. Participants, artists, performers and members of the community then gathered in front of the Día de los Muertos mural for a group photo.
Presented by Museum of Northern Arizona and Flagstaff Nuestras Raíces, the event featured music, dance performances, discussions on Hispanic history in Northern Arizona and information on the history of the altars presented in the courtyard.
Flagstaff Nuestras Raices is presenting is first food calendar featuring a variety of Hispanic cuisine recipes. The cover features an image of a altar of las Guadalupanas.
A limited number of 2012 calendars, complete with Hispanic cuisine recipes, and T-shirts celebrating the event are available from the nonprofit, 501(C)3 organization. Ballet Folklorico de Colores of Flagstaff, singer Alena Chavez, Los Compardres and mariachi performer Lilly Jurell were some of the entertainment scheduled on the museum grounds.
The event also included sugar skull demonstrations and workshops, papel picado workshops, children’s author Monica Brown.
