The Coconino Hispanic Advisory Council (C.H.A.C.) was established in 2001 by the Board of Supervisors to provide an official liaison and communications link between the Hispanic/Latino community and Coconino County.

CHAC to present fourth annual César E. Chávez Community Recognition Celebration on March 30

FLAGSTAFF — The Coconino County Hispanic Advisory Council (CHAC) will present its fourth annual César E. Chávez Community Recognition Breakfast from 7:30 to 9 a.m. Friday, March 30, 2018 at American Legion Post 3, 204 W. Birch Ave., Flagstaff.

The event honors local Hispanic community leaders and veterans.

Tickets are $12. Required reservations due by 5 p.m. Friday, March 23. Contact Susan Garretson at sgarretson@coconino.az.gov or call (928) 679-7144 to make reservations or for more information.

About CHAC: The Coconino County Hispanic Advisory Council was established in 2001 with the purpose of advising the County Board of Supervisors on issues and concerns that affect the Hispanic community in Coconino County. In addition to serving as an advisory group to the county supervisors, the council has identified the following five major areas of focus:

  • To conduct forums on issues and concerns of the Hispanic community
  • To promote awareness of the need for diversity in employment, training and economic development
  • To assist Coconino County in recruiting and retaining Hispanic employees
  • To promote Hispanic culture, arts, historic activities and events
  • To examine and make policy recommendations in the areas of education, housing, land use, health, social services, recreation and criminal justice

March 26 through 30 — NAU Ethnic Studies to present César Chávez Week events

FLAGSTAFF — NAU Ethnic Studies will present a series of César Chávez Weekevents from March 26 through March 30.

Events include:

  • March 26 — 7 to 9 p.m. Monday — Film showing of “Salt of the Earth” (1954), NAU Student Union, Room 105, Office of Inclusion: Multicultural & LGBTQIA Student Services (IMQ).
  • March 27 — 4:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday — Opening of the Farmworkers Photo Collection with Dr. Jerry Garcia. “The Farmworker Experience and UFW Organizing in the Pacific Northwest,” NAU Student Union Extension (near the food court).
  • March 28 — 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday — “The Crusade for Justice and Corky Gonzales Relationship with Cesar Chavez and the Farmworker Movement” with Ernesto Virgil, SBS Castro Building, Room 217.
  • March 29 — 4:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday — “Agricultural Labor Production and Organizing in the U.S. Empire 1900 to 1980” with Dr. Jose G. Moreno. Film: Documentary on “Dolores Huerta” 2018).
  • March 30 — 4 to 6 p.m. Friday — MEChA de NAU Film Night — “Walkout” (2006), NAU Student Union, Room 105, Office of Inclusion: Multicultural & LGBTQIA Student Services (IMQ).
