Free ‘Concert in the Park’ presented by Hermosa Vida to be held July 9 in Flagstaff

JulyFLAGSTAFF —  The City of Flagstaff and Hermosa Vida will sponsor a free outdoor concert from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 9 at Bushmaster Park, 3150 N. Alta Vista, Flagstaff.

The event is part of a series of concerts on Wednesdays which run through July.

The shows feature local artists, representing several music genres including rock, folk, bluegrass, reggae, celtic, and blues.

Bring your lawn chairs and blankets to enjoy an evening of live music and fresh air in the beautiful setting of our mountain city, organizers reported.

Feast Day to be celebrated Dec. 11-12 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Flagstaff

OLG Feast DayFLAGSTAFF — Flagstaff Nuestras Raíces will participate in a series of events in December to celebrate the progress of the renovation project in the basement of  Our Lady of Guadalupe.

The group will participate in the traditional Our Lady of Guadalupe Procession the early evening of  Wednesday, Dec. 11. The procession will begin at Our Lady of Guadalupe, 224 So. Kendrick St., Flagstaff, and continue to San Francisco de Asis Catholic Church, 1600 E Route 66.

On Dec. 12, Las Mananitas will be held at at 6 a.m., followed by the Rosary at 6:30 a.m. and a Mass at 7 a.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe. Coffee and pan dulce will be provided after the Mass by Flagstaff Nuestras Raíces.

A community potluck will then be held at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 12 at Our Lady of Guadalupe.

Ethnic Studies ban discussion to be held Oct. 30 at NAU

Nov. 30 — Ethnic Studies BanFLAGSTAFF — Sean Arce, former director of the Mexican American Studies (MAS) Program at the Tucson Unified School District, will talk about his role in challenging the ban on Ethnic Studies in Arizona at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 30 at Northern Arizona University, SBA Castro, Room 110.

Arce will also outline a process for fulfilling the legal mandate to desegregate Tucson schools and affirm the importance of Ethnic Studies curricula in public education.

A luncheon discussion will be held from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 30 at the Ethnic Studies Office, SBS West, Room 100.

Flagstaff City Council to discuss comprehensive immigration reform on Sept. 24

City of FlagstaffFLAGSTAFF — The Flagstaff City Council will discuss a resolution in support of comprehensive immigration reform at its next work session meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 24 at the Flagstaff City Hall, 211 W. Aspen Ave., Flagstaff.

Supporters of the resolution (see resolution below), are urged to attend the meeting and show their support, the Northern Arizona Interfaith Council reported in a media release.

“We need you there. Some may argue that it is not the place of local government to take a stand on national issues. But we believe that when our community is being so negatively impacted by lack of federal action, we have an obligation as a city to make a public statement to our Congressional representatives,” the Interfaith Council reported. “Let’s pack City Hall to show that we are not giving up on fair immigration reform. If you would like to speak in support of the resolution, please contact us so that we can coordinate our comments.”
