CHAC to hold next meeting on Feb. 4, 2019

cropped-cchac-masthed.jpgFLAGSTAFF — The Coconino County Hispanic Advisory Council (CHAC) will hold its next public meeting at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 4, 2019* at the Coconino County Administration Building, 219 E. Cherry Ave., Flagstaff, Arizona.

* Feb. 4, 2019 meeting moved from usual first Wednesday of the month. Time, location subject to change. Notice of changes will be posted 24 hours prior to meeting.

CHAC serves as an official liaison and communications link between the Hispanic community and the Coconino County Board of Supervisors, so please bring any concerns you may have about equal education opportunities, fair employment, juvenile justice, political representation and other issues.

CHAC is a supporter of the Ballet Folklórico de Colores — Flagstaff, Flagstaff Nuestras Raíces, the Hispanic Convocation at Northern Arizona University, the Sunnyside Neighborhood Association of Flagstaff and other organizations.

CHAC celebrates variety of events in December

FLAGSTAFF — Members of the Coconino Hispanic Advisory Council (CHAC) participated in a number of events in December as 2018 came to a close.

CHAC members participated, above and below, at the Northern Arizona University “Lumberjacks of Inclusion” ceremony held Dec. 13 at the High Country Conference Center.

“Similar to a convocation ceremony, Lumberjacks of Inclusion brings together and honors graduating students from all ethnic, cultural, identity, service and experiential backgrounds,” the university reported in a media release. “In this unique event, all students will celebrate together with shared performances, convocation ceremonies and special refreshments.” Photos above and below by Ruth Eaton.

CHAC joins other Diversity Councils during the 2018 Holiday Parade of Lights

FLAGSTAFF — The Coconino Hispanic Advisory Council joined with the African American Advisory and the Intertribal Advisory councils for the 2018 Vora Financial Holiday Parade of Lights, held Dec. 8 in downtown Flagstaff.

A variety of local businesses, non profit organizations, public safety and other agencies took part in the event.

CHAC joins with NAU student, community groups to present Día de los Muertos Celebration

FLAGSTAFF — A variety of NAU student clubs held their annual Día de los Muertos Celebration on Nov. 3 at Killip Elementary School.

The event was presented by NAU Hermanas, United for Change and sponsored by WF Killip Elementary School, the Coconino Hispanic Advisory Council (CHAC) and Flagstaff Nuestras Raíces.

The celebration, which has outgrown previous venues at the Murdoch Cultural Center and the Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church Cultural Arts Center, was moved to Killip this year.

The annual event, which honors Day of the Dead, included performances by members of Ballet Folklorico de Colores de Flagstaff, an altar / ofrenda presentation by members of Flagstaff Nuestras Raíces, sugar skull decorating, food and a piñata for children.
