Coconino County, City of Flagstaff proclaim Sept. 15 through Oct. 15, 2023 as Hispanic Heritage Month

FLAGSTAFF — At their regular meeting on Tuesday, September 12, the Coconino County Board of Supervisors (Board) unanimously adopted a proclamation recognizing September 15 through October 15, 2023 as Hispanic Heritage Month in Coconino County.

The proclamation, drafted by County Human Resources staff and members of the Coconino Hispanic Advisory Council (CHAC), reads in part “Hispanics and Latinos are some of the earliest native residents of the southwestern United States and Hispanics in Coconino County were amongst the first pioneers in Flagstaff and Coconino County. Many working in the sawmill and railroad industry as an integral piece of establishing our mountain town of Flagstaff and the continued development of Coconino County.”

“It’s always our great pleasure to help celebrate the great diversity of Coconino County,” said Jeronimo Vasquez, Chair of the Board and Supervisor for District 2. “Being Latino, I’m proud to be a part of this tradition and feel it’s very important to take time to learn about the contributions of Latinos and Hispanics in the county throughout our history.”

An annual Hispanic Heritage observance first began in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting September 15 and ending on October 15 each year. FLAGSTAFF — The City of Flagstaff — Office of the Mayor, has proclaimed Sept, 15 through Oct. 15, 2023 as National Hispanic Heritage Month.

“The City of Flagstaff observes, embraces, respects, and celebrates National Hispanic Heritage Month. Hispanic Heritage Month also called “Yes de Herencia Hispana”, is celebrated nationwide from September 15th through October 15th each year to commemorate the history, culture, and contributions of Hispanic, Latino, and Latinx peoples whose ancestors originated the Caribbean, Central and South America, Mexico, and Spain. …”

CHAC concludes busy summer of 2023

Members of the Coconino Hispanic Advisory Council (CHAC) took part in a number of activities during the summer of 2023.

CHAC held its first in-person meeting since the start of the Covid-19 Pandemic during a tour of the new Killip Elementary School in Flagstaff on Aug. 2, 2023. Members attending the meeting included President Patty Garcia, Vice President Jose Diaz Aquino, Katie Mommaerts, Frank Moraga, Miguel Vasquez and Sedrick Cap. Also attending the tour by Killip Principal Joe Gutierrez were District 2 Supervisor Jeronimo Vasquez and Coconino County Diversity Councils Coordinator Areina Contreras.

CHAC, community celebrates 2023 Flagstaff 4th of July Parade

FLAGSTAFF — More than 90 entries took part in the annual Flagstaff 4th of July Parade presented by the Greater Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce.

This year’s festivities began in the far northern reaches of Beaver Street, through downtown and up through San Francisco Street.

Members of the Coconino Hispanic Advisory Council (CHAC) once again took part in the annual event, participating with the Coconino County entry.

The parade included school children from Flagstaff Unified School District, the Flagstaff Police and Fire Departments, numerous business and community non-profit and government organizations.

Diversity Councils take part in Coconino County 2023 Diversity Day celebration

FLAGSTAFF — Members of the Coconino County’s Diversity Councils took part in annual Coconino County Diversity Day celebration held Wednesday, June 21, 2023 at the Coconino County Courthouse Lawn, Flagstaff.

The event included information booths presented by a variety of groups including various Coconino County departments including Parks and Recreation, the Coconino Hispanic Advisory Council (CHAC), the Indigenous Peoples Advisory Council, the Peace Corps, Northern Arizona University’s Office of Inclusion and other organizations.

Coconino County officials have stated the county celebrates diversity by appreciating individual differences and recognizing our organization which fosters an inclusive work environment in which all employees are inspired to contribute their best, strengthened by their different perspectives, backgrounds and life experiences.

Flagstaff High School celebrates 2023 Hispanic Convocation

Flagstaff High School celebrated its 2023 Hispanic Convocation with the largest group of students in recent memory on Wednesday, May 10. Nearly 90 students took the stage to receive their colorful sarape sashes from new United Way of Northern Arizona President and CEO Elizabeth ‘Liz’ Archuleta, FHS Principal Libby Miller; Assistant Principal Trish Eberlein, Assistant Principal Matthew Barquin and Athletic Director Jeannine Brandel.

Archuleta, who provided the keynote address, urged the students to consider themselves as leaders, envision their successful futures and remember they belong in the room and the conversation as they move ahead in their careers.

She drew upon her personal story, as a child whose parents attended FHS, as an NAU graduate, a former Coconino County Supervisor and her recent role as a member of the Harris-Biden Administration. She recently began her service as the head of the United Way of Northern Arizona.

Principal Miller and the administration also thanked in the program Susan Mendez, Ellie Rodríguez, Jeannine Brandel in the program, along with special thanks to Mike and Sarah Cromer.
