Applications open for Sept. 14-15 Camp Moreno in Flagstaff

Camp Moreno on Sept. 14-15FLAGSTAFF — Applications are now open for the second annual “¡Camp Moreno!” to be held Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 14-15 at Sunset Crater National Monument, O’Leary Group campground.

Designed to promote the use and enjoyment of natural areas by Latino youth, the program is presented by the Alpino Foundation in cooperation with Flagstaff Area Monuments and the coordination of the Coconino Hispanic Advisory Council (CHAC).

You are invited to spend a family weekend in contact with nature. No membership fees required. Camping equipment included.

Sunnyside Neighbor Association to present 18th annual ‘Fiesta de Mayo’ in Flagstaff

Fiesta de Mayo - May 11-12The Sunnyside Neighborhood Association will present the 18th annual Fiesta de Mayo Celebration from noon to 8 p.m. Saturday, May 11 and from noon to 7 p.m. Sunday, May 12 at Ponderosa Park, 2512 No. First St., Flagstaff.

The event traditionally features live music, arts and crafts booths, food vendors, traditional folkorico dancers and other activities for young people. Scheduled entertainment on May 11 includes Polka Katzen, KidZone, Pony Express, Ballet Folklorico de Colores, Potros de la Sierra and Conjunto Kalera. Scheduled entertainment for May 12 includes Reye’s Daughter, Felipe Campas y Banda, Azteca Dancers, Monico, Classik y Amigos, Alena Chavez and El Domador y su Imagen Grupera.

The celebration is a fundraiser for the Sunnyside Neighborhood Association of Flagstaff Inc., a recognized IRS non-profit 501(c) 3 community-driven organization, to help it promote the sustainable economic success of individuals and businesses within the Sunnyside neighborhood. The neighborhood consists of about 7,000 individuals, about 10 percent of Flagstaff’s overall population. “Enriching lives by mobilizing residents to create continual improvement” is the mission of the association.

The Fiesta de Mayo Celebration honors the significance and the importance of history, culture and unity and is considered one of Flagstaff’s premier cultural attractions, with 5,000 people attending the annual event, organizers have reported.

Hosted by Northern Arizona Institutions for Community Leadership (NAJCL) of the Northern Arizona Interfaith Council.

  • Medicaid Expansion in Arizona
  • College Opportunities for Immigrant Students

Ballet Folklorico de Colores to hold Kermes fiesta on April 27

IMG_2063_2Ballet Folklorico de Colores is hosting a traditional Kermes (Kermesse) fiesta on Saturday, April 27, from noon to 6, at Puente de Hozho school (next to MEMs on Fourth Street).

Festivities include live entertainment, a dance contest, bounce houses, game stands, plenty of traditional food/beverages/snacks for sale, and performances by Ballet Folklorico.

Admission is free.

‘Dancing Across Borders’ fundraiser for No More Deaths will be held April 27

Screen Shot 2013-04-04 at 5.51.52 PMThe 6th annual “Dancing Across Borders” fundraiser, to benefit No More Deaths, will be held from 7 to 11 p.m. Saturday, April 27 at Transzend Studio, 417 W. Santa Fe Ave., Flagstaff.

No More Deaths is an organization whose mission is to end death and suffering on the U.S./Mexico border through civil initiative: the conviction that people of conscience must work openly and in community to uphold fundamental human rights, Flagstaffdance.com reported.

Sponsored by NAU Latin Dance Club, No More Deaths, Mindtribe Mobile Music.

The  NAU Latin Dance Club will provide dance lessons.

A silent auction and raffle (all items donated by local artists and businesses), will also be held at the event.
